El Clasico looms on the horizon for the big two in Spain on the weekend. These games are always atmospheric, and often provide a gladiatorial atmosphere for the players, and this one is likely to be no exception. In a constellation of stars, both teams have an established team leader, and an aspiring newcomer, and the fate of the game may well be decided by which of these two pairs performs the better. Recent games between the two have seen battles between Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi as the deciding factors of games; whichever of the two best players in the world wins ascendancy has settled the issue. Both Ronaldo and Messi netted for their clubs in midweek Champions’ League games against Italian opposition. This weekend’s game however, may hinge on the expensive new recruits, and which of them can step up to the plate.

After his protracted transfer saga over the summer, this game will be the very essence of the reason – aside from the undoubted increase in salary – that Gareth Bale fought so hard to join Real Madrid. To play in a match-up between two of Europe’s biggest clubs, and be on the same pitch as the two outstanding players of the generation is a ‘Boy’s Own’ experience for any young player, and as the most expensive – or second most expensive if you choose to take on board the ‘Ronaldo-ego-massaging spin put on the deal by Madrid – Bale has every right to be there. The Welshman has yet to ignite his career at the Bernabeu into full flame, but a virtuoso performance at the home of Madrid’s bitterest rivals, with all of the political back play apparent, would go a long way to making endearing him to both club and fans.

I couple of weeks ago, I travelled to Barcelona to see Neymar play in the flesh, as it were. In fairness, the idea was to see Messi play again, but as the little Maestro was injured, the Brazilian tyro was required to step up. There’s a real comparison between Bale and Neymar, as the weapons they have at their disposal are so different. Whilst Bale is all pace and athleticism, very much in the same vein as Ronaldo, with a free kick that would also rival the Portuguese’s expertise, Neymar’s game is built on guile, evasiveness and the ability to glide past players. Watching the Brazilian for a full ninety minutes or so, it was interesting to note that he rarely dribbled past people, his method is more to run around them with a shimmy and a change of pace, that often leads to the rash tackle and flow of free kicks that he accrues.

Real Madrid currently lie three points adrift of the Blaugrana, and a defeat at the Camp Nou would double that, with the gap then beginning to assume major proportions. It is therefore important to Carlo Ancelotti’s ram that they do not succumb. Given the make-up of the teams, it appears likely that the pace of Ronaldo and Bale will be deployed in the areas behind the rampaging Barca full backs, unless this is curbed by Martino. It’s ploy that has a decent success rate for playing against the Catlans. It’s likely that attack will be the home team’s mantra, whilst counter-attack will form Madrid’s plan.

The outcome of these games is so difficult to call. The assembled talent on show, much of which is not mentioned here, means that the result can be decided with an incandescent moment of brilliance from anyone of a dozen or so players. That said, with home advantage, and the need to satisfy the home fans’ voracious desire to defeat Madrid, I take Barca to come out with narrow win, say 2-0 or 2-1.El Clasico looms on the horizon for the big two in Spain on the weekend. Magnificent seven for Barca, Madrid leave it late

Barcelona produced a stunning display to hammer Levante 7-0 at the Camp Nou on Sunday in Gerardo Martino's first competitive match in charge, while Real Madrid left it late to give Carlo Ancelotti a winning start as they beat Real Betis 2-1.

Spanish champions Barca showed no signs of early season rust as they ripped Levante apart with goals from Alexis Sanchez, Lionel Messi (2), Dani Alves, Pedro and Xavi giving them an incredible 6-0 lead at half-time.

There was even more for the home fans to cheer after the break as Neymar made his competitive debut as a substitute and even after Martino had shown the visitors some mercy by withdrawing Messi with 20 minutes remaining, more woeful defending allowed Pedro to round off the scoring with his second of the game.

"I was anxious for the league to start to see where the team were and I have been left very calm," said Martino.

"We put a lot of emphasis on pressing and we managed to sustain it for the majority of the match."

It took Barca barely two minutes to register their first goal of the campaign as Sanchez finished off a fine team move before Messi opened his account for the season with a side-footed finish from close range.

Alves tapped home the third on 23 minutes before further strikes from Pedro, Messi from the penalty spot and Xavi made it six before half-time.

The Catalans weren't quite as clinical after the break, but the moment many inside the crowd had been waiting for arrived on 62 minutes as Neymar made his competitive bow in a Barca shirt in place of the impressive Sanchez.

The Brazilian's only moment of note was when he picked up an unnecessary yellow card, but Barca did manage one more goal before the end as Pedro side-footed home his second of the night.

It was a far more complicated evening for Real however as they needed a headed winner from debutant Isco four minutes from time to take all three points against a spirited Betis.

"I am very happy, above all for the victory," Isco told Canal Plus afterwards.

"It is the first goal that I have scored with my head.

"The truth is that Betis surprised us a bit but it is the first game of the league, we have to improve a lot but we have just started."

Jorge Molina gave the visitors the lead their bright opening deserved on 14 minutes as Cedric Mabwati burst past Sergio Ramos and laid the ball across the area for Molina to slot home.

Slowly but surely Madrid started to find their feet though and they were level midway through the first-half when Karim Benzema swept home from Isco's pass.

Both sides then struck the bar either side of half-time as Nosa headed against the woodwork for Betis before Cristiano Ronaldo came within inches of marking his 200th appearance for Madrid in style as his shot from the edge of the area came back off the bar.

Nosa had another fantastic opportunity to put Betis back in front as he headed over when completely unmarked just 10 yards out 19 minutes from time.

And Betis were made to pay for their profligacy in front of goal as with the clock winding down, Isco made a fine late run into the area to meet Marcelo's cross and plant a header high past Stephan Andersen.

Atletico Madrid, who face Barca on Wednesday in the first-leg of the Spanish Super Cup, also began their campaign with a 3-1 victory away to Sevilla thanks to a double from Diego Costa.

The Brazilian -- who signed a three-year extension to his contract last week -- opened the scoring 10 minutes before half-time only for Diego Perotti's wonderful strike from 25 yards to level matters two minutes later.

However, Costa was to have the final word as he strode onto Koke's pass to finish low past Beto in the Sevilla goal 11 minutes from time before Cristian Rodriguez added a third in stoppage time.

And Granada got some early recompense for the money they have invested in the transfer market as goals from Youssef El Arabi and Hassan Yebda handed them a 2-1 win over Osasuna.

Madrid draw hands title to Barca

Barcelona were crowned Primera Division champions after nearest challengers Real Madrid failed to beat Espanyol at Estadi Cornella-El Prat.

Holders Madrid needed a victory at the home of Barca's city rivals to prevent Tito Vilanova's men from taking their title, but they were held to a 1-1 draw.

The result leaves Barca seven points clear at the summit ahead of their trip to Atletico Madrid, with Jose Mourinho's side now only having two league games left this season.

This is the fourth time in the last five years that Barca have been crowned Spanish champions and the 22nd time in their history - 10 behind arch rivals Madrid.

Christian Stuani's 23rd-minute strike put Espanyol ahead but Gonzalo Higuain levelled matters after 58 minutes before Espanyol were reduced to 10 men in injury-time when Victor Sanchez was given his second yellow card.

Athletic Bilbao took a giant step towards sealing their Primera Division status after overcoming nine-man Real Mallorca 2-1 at San Mames.

Aritz Aduriz gave the hosts an early lead but then missed a penalty after Andreu Fontas was sent off on 25 minutes. Fernando Llorente doubled the advantage late in the second half but Mallorca forward Giovani Dos Santos made for an exciting finish by netting a superb goal two minutes later.

However, Mallorca's hopes of snatching a late equaliser were struck a blow in injury time when Ximo Navarro was also sent off for a second booking and Athletic were able to hold on.

Alejandro Arribas struck a second-half winner to earn Osasuna a potentially priceless 1-0 victory in their fight to avoid the drop.

Arribas netted 16 minutes from time as Osasuna ended a five-match winless streak with a deserved triumph that moves them four points above third-bottom Deportivo La Coruna, who lost 1-0 at Real Valladolid.
